Let's talk about the elephant in the room: AI content is flooding the internet. As someone building a platform for online communities, I've had to wrestle with this reality head-on. Not in theory, not in the future, but right now.
We know AI depends on massive data sets, consumes immense amounts of energy, disrupts traditional job markets, and more. The ethical debates around these trade-offs are justifiable. But this article isn't here to settle that. It's about the here-and-now: how to preserve genuine human connection in an AI-driven world, because how we handle AI content today will shape our online communities tomorrow.
Here's what I've learned: the debate about AI content isn't as simple as "ban it" or "embrace it." There's another path forward - one that keeps human connection at the center while acknowledging AI as a powerful tool.
When we launched Grivio, we knew we'd face the AI content question. What we didn't expect was how quickly it would become central to our community-building mission. We've seen both extremes:
Content farms pushing out endless AI-generated articles with no real value
Passionate community builders afraid to use any AI tools for fear of being inauthentic
Neither approach serves our communities. The first floods the internet with what is called AI slop - content that exists just to exist. The second cuts builders off from tools that could help them create better experiences for their communities.
Here's what I've discovered through running Grivio: people don't actually care if you used AI to help write something. They care if what you wrote helped them, taught them, or made them feel connected to something larger than themselves.
The problem isn't AI - it's thoughtless content that doesn't serve a real human need. I'll be honest: I use AI tools regularly, including while writing this piece. The key is that I'm using them to amplify my voice, not replace it. Each piece starts with a real human experience or insight that I want to share.
So what does this look like in practice? Here's how we approach it at Grivio:
Start with human connection. What are you trying to share? Who are you trying to help? What conversation do you want to start?
Use AI as a collaborative tool, not a replacement for human thought. Bounce ideas around, explore different angles, challenge your own thinking.
Add your unique perspective. AI can help structure thoughts or suggest angles, but your experiences and insights are what make content valuable.
Focus on community impact. Will this help your community members? Will it foster meaningful discussions or connections?
We're building Grivio to be a place where real communities thrive. That means taking a stand against mindless AI content while embracing tools that help community builders create better experiences.
The internet doesn't need more content - it needs more connection. More real voices sharing real experiences. More genuine attempts to help others learn and grow.
You might use AI to help you write clearer documentation for your community. You might use it to explore different approaches to a community challenge. That's fine - great, even. What matters is that you're using these tools in service of building real connections between real people.
This isn't about finding a middle ground between pro-AI and anti-AI positions. It's about charting a new path entirely - one that keeps human connection at the center while using AI to amplify, not replace, our voices.
The real opportunity here goes beyond just building better online spaces. For the first time in history, we have tools that could free people to pursue their creative passions rather than just the work that pays bills. When AI helps you create content more efficiently, you can choose to reinvest those savings into the creators who inspire your community. It's about building an ecosystem where technological efficiency and human creativity amplify each other.
The future of online communities won't be built by AI. It'll be built by people using every tool at their disposal to create spaces where others can find belonging, share knowledge, and build meaningful connections. Where creators can focus on what they do best - creating.
That's the path we're choosing. And that's what we're building at Grivio.
