Nintendo has released system update 20.0.0 for the Nintendo Switch, introducing substantial changes that prepare the platform for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. This major update brings several new features that will ensure a smooth transition between console generations.
Virtual Game Cards
The update introduces virtual game cards, allowing users to manage their digital software purchases in a new way:
Purchased Nintendo Switch digital software, DLC, and select free software now appear as virtual game cards
Users can virtually load and eject these cards between up to two Nintendo Switch systems
Virtual game cards can be lent to other members within the same Nintendo Account family group
GameShare Functionality
A new GameShare feature has been added, enabling compatible software to be shared from a Nintendo Switch 2 system to nearby systems for multiplayer gameplay:
Only works via local wireless connection
The Nintendo Switch 2 system must initiate the GameShare process
Not compatible between original Nintendo Switch models (standard, OLED, or Lite)
Online License Settings
A new option allows players to access their purchased content more flexibly:
When enabled, users can play downloaded software or DLC they've purchased while connected to the internet, even without the virtual game card loaded
System Transfer to Nintendo Switch 2
Perhaps the most significant addition is the ability to transfer system data to the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2:
Users can perform a system transfer using local communication once they have both consoles
For those trading in their original Switch before receiving a Switch 2, there's an option to upload system transfer data to a dedicated server
The server option will initialize the original Switch to factory settings after upload
An internet connection and Nintendo Account are required for both transfer methods
Visual Updates
The update also includes several visual modifications:
The Nintendo eShop and Nintendo Switch News icons on the HOME Menu have had their colors changed to align with the Nintendo Switch 2 aesthetic
Multiple save data files can now be selected and transferred simultaneously
The appearance of some user icons has been updated
This update strongly signals that the Nintendo Switch 2 release is imminent. The cloud backup feature is particularly valuable for those planning to trade in their current system toward the purchase of the new console.
Nintendo is clearly focused on ensuring a smooth transition between generations, implementing features that will maintain software libraries and save progress while encouraging adoption of the new hardware.
For current Switch owners, now is an excellent time to organize digital purchases and save data in preparation for the eventual switch to Nintendo's next-generation console
